A councilman has been assassinated while standing outside his home in Ecuador, marking the second death of a local politician in months after a presidential candidate was executed in August.

Charbel Rouhana was approached by two individuals riding a motorcycle and shot multiple times Tuesday evening in the town of Yaguachi, Interior Minister Juan Zapata told The Associated Press.

‘Unfortunately, they fired gunshots, hitman-style,’ Zapata said.

Rouhana’s murder came just three days after he had celebrated his 50th birthday with music and a horse riding outing.
