Courts greenlight Trump’s federal purge of probationary employees. Nearly 20 agencies now face mass terminations.

Court Ruling:

The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in favor of the Trump administration, stating that a lower court likely lacked the authority to reinstate probationary employees.

The ruling affects employees with less than a year of service in their current roles, though some are long-time federal workers in new positions.

Scope of Terminations:

Approximately 25,000 probationary employees were terminated in February 2025 following directives from the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) to identify “non-essential” workers.

Agencies affected include the Department of Defense, Department of Agriculture, and Environmental Protection Agency, among others.
