Council considering 3% tax on Airbnb, other short term-rental operations.

Its a money grab like any other tax. F*ck them, smart people will work around it.

via MSN:

Dec. 1—Delaware County Council is considering a 3% tax on Airbnb operators and others in the short-term rental business, something hotels have been paying for years.

Last month, county council had a first reading to amend the county code to bring it into compliance with updates that had been made at the state level.

That includes a 3% tax on Airbnb and similar operators. A first reading does not automatically enact a provision into regulation.

If the move is followed by a second reading, public hearing and council adoption, it would become valid within 10 days of council approval.

“What the tax rate is going to do is modernize the language,” Stephen Byrne, executive director of Visit Delco, said. “It’s going to bring it into compliance with the state law.”

He explained that state law provides for an occupancy tax from 3% to 5% on any short-term rentals that are 30 days or less.
