Congressman seeks full crypto conflict ban

Washington is taking aim at digital asset conflicts. Congressman Jim Himes has introduced an amendment to the CLARITY Act, seeking to bar federal officials and their families from profiting off cryptocurrency-related conflicts of interest.

The proposal is sweeping. The amendment would prohibit the President, Vice President, Members of Congress, and Senate-confirmed executive branch officials from issuing or holding financial stakes in digital assets. Their spouses and children would also be restricted.

Himes didn’t hold back. “It is madness that we should be allowed to issue a memecoin or a digital asset or a digital commodity because it’s just a vehicle for a bribe,” he stated. His argument is clear—regulators should not be allowed to profit from the very industry they oversee.

The timing is significant. Crypto markets have surged in recent months, drawing increased scrutiny from lawmakers. The Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, introduced in May, is already under review, and Himes’ amendment adds another layer of regulation.
