The U.S. Treasury Department has confirmed a “major incident” involving a Chinese state-sponsored hack, raising serious national security concerns. Discovered on December 8, 2024, the breach occurred via BeyondTrust, a third-party software provider. Hackers exploited a stolen key to gain remote access to employee workstations and unclassified documents.
Although the hackers no longer appear to have access, the breach exposed vulnerabilities in critical government systems. The Treasury Department is collaborating with the FBI, CISA, and intelligence agencies to assess the impact. Enhanced cybersecurity measures are now in place, but questions about system integrity remain.
