Chinese companies order Nvidia chips worth $5B amid fears of US curbs

China’s top tech companies, including Alibaba, Baidu, ByteDance, and Tencent, have placed orders worth $5 billion for Nvidia chips to make generative AI systems.

The orders include $1 billion for 100,000 A800 processors to be delivered this year, as well as an additional $4 billion worth of graphics processing units to be delivered in 2024.

Chinese companies are stockpiling the A800 chips due to export limitations imposed by the US last year and fears of new export restrictions.
