A powerful bomb cyclone, equivalent to a Category 4 hurricane, is set to slam the US West Coast this week, bringing extreme weather conditions. The storm is fueled by a Category 5 atmospheric river, and it will span from Washington State to Northern California. This explosive weather system is forecasted to cause widespread damage, including catastrophic flooding, hurricane-force winds, and massive snowfall in mountainous areas.
The storm will undergo bombogenesis, with pressure dropping by 50-60 millibars in less than 24 hours. Starting with a pressure over 1,000 millibars on Monday night, it may fall below 950 millibars by Tuesday night. This rapid drop in pressure mimics the intensity of a Category 4 hurricane, signaling an exceptionally strong system.
The cyclone will unleash up to 21 inches of rain in parts of Northern California, leading to dangerous river and flash flooding. Winds will intensify, reaching hurricane-force speeds, while large swells will exacerbate the impacts along the coastline.
In addition to the flooding and wind, the storm will bring heavy snow to the mountains. Expect several feet of snow in the Cascades and Sierra Nevada, potentially making travel difficult and dangerous.
This bomb cyclone will test the resilience of communities along the West Coast. With widespread flooding, blizzard conditions in the mountains, and the threat of downed trees and power outages, it’s crucial for residents to prepare for one of the most intense storms of the season.
