For decades, backing Israel was one of the few issues both parties mostly agreed on.
That agreement suddenly looks a lot weaker.
A new AP-NORC poll found 58% of Democrats now think the U.S. is too supportive of Israel.
That is up from 45% in early 2024.
Even 51% of Jewish Democrats now say the U.S. backs Israel too much.
That number surprised me more than anything else.
When opinions inside your own coalition move that fast, something bigger is happening.
It doesn’t stop there.
62% of Democrats now want the U.S. to do more for Palestinians.
That is up from 49% before.
Even older Democrats are catching up fast.
Two years ago, 39% wanted more support for Palestinians.
Now it is 57%.
That tells me this is no longer just a campus activist story.
The party itself is changing.
Republicans still look much more supportive of Israel.
About 60% say current U.S. support is about right.
Only 2 in 10 think America is too supportive.
But there is one crack worth watching.
Younger Republicans are noticeably more critical than older Republicans.
That feels like a generational shift, not just a partisan one.
Another number jumped off the page.
One third of all Americans now believe Israel committed genocide in Gaza.
That includes half of Democrats.
Even 30% of Jewish adults said the same.
Whether people agree with that label or not, those views make it much harder for politicians to treat Israel aid like untouchable policy.
Then there is Netanyahu.
Only 20% of Americans view him favorably.
Even 6 in 10 Jewish adults hold an unfavorable view.
That makes separating support for Israel from support for its current government even harder.
This also matches recent polling showing Democratic views of Israel becoming much more negative.
Progressive candidates criticizing Israeli policy are also winning more attention inside the party.
The old bipartisan consensus didn’t disappear overnight.
But it definitely isn’t holding together like it used to.
Politicians usually follow voters.
If these numbers keep moving, expect much louder fights over military aid, foreign policy, and America’s relationship with Israel before the midterms.
This feels less like a temporary polling swing.
It feels like the rules of this debate are being rewritten in real time.
