‘Melbourne public housing tower residents will receive compensation payments of about $2,200 each from the Victorian government after they were forced into a sudden hard lockdown during a COVID-19 outbreak.
On Monday, the government’s lawyers told the Supreme Court the measures taken in July 2020 were justified but that a settlement had been put forward to avoid a lengthy court battle with the residents.
In a class action lawsuit against the state, plaintiffs alleged the group was unlawfully detained for up to 14 days when a lockdown was imposed on nine towers in North Melbourne and Flemington.
About 3,000 residents were prevented from leaving under strict quarantine measures which saw police ring-fence the buildings.’
