Australia faces catastrophic flooding, four dead and 50,000 stranded in rising waters

Unrelenting rains have turned large sections of eastern Australia into disaster zones. The floodwaters have surged through towns, submerging homes, sweeping away vehicles, and leaving entire communities cut off from emergency help. Rescue teams are working around the clock to reach people trapped in their homes, but conditions are making it harder by the hour.

The death toll has climbed to four, including an elderly man who was found in his submerged vehicle near Coffs Harbour. Authorities fear more fatalities as water levels continue to rise. Roads have collapsed, bridges have been washed away, and emergency responders are warning that many areas remain unreachable.

More than 50,000 people are stranded due to washed-out roads and widespread power failures. The number of rescues is climbing fast, with emergency crews evacuating over 670 residents. Helicopters are plucking people from rooftops, while rescue boats navigate through streets that have turned into rivers.

Infrastructure has taken a severe hit. Power outages have left thousands without electricity, and restoration efforts are slow due to hazardous conditions. Essential Energy reports that over 5,700 homes and businesses remain offline, mainly in the Mid North Coast region. Crews are working to restore service, but the damage is extensive.

Livestock losses are mounting, with dairy farms in Barrington and the Lower Macleay region seeing entire herds swept away. Farmers are bracing for serious financial losses as crops and grazing lands remain submerged.

The Warragamba Dam, which supplies Sydney’s drinking water, is nearing capacity at 96 percent. Officials warn that if rainfall continues, overflow could worsen flood conditions in surrounding towns.
