NATO’s Europe plan for the Balloon going up was that the armies of the ENTIRE European NATO contingent, and US Forces in Europe would be totally destroyed by the Warsaw Pact with 30 to 45 days MAX, IF the War in Europe stayed conventional.
They were there to hopefully blunt the charge, not defeat it, and drag the Russians into positional fighting until the convoys from North America began to arrive. And this was with European Armies MANY times the size of today.
If that did not work, it was US POLICY beginning with Carter, to use First Strike Tactical Nuclear Weapons to slow them down.
That is why protecting the great REFORGER convoys to Europe was so important. Once they began to arrive, even with losses, they could begin to turn the tide.
