A tourism project that was supposed to represent investment and growth has turned into a major public backlash.
The protests started in Zvërnec village after fencing appeared around beach areas connected to a planned luxury resort project.
The movement became known as the “Flamingo Revolution” because protesters use flamingos as a symbol of the protected wetlands they say are being threatened.
The project is linked to Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump and involves Sazan Island and parts of the Vjosa Narta protected lagoon near Vlora.
The estimated value is massive, somewhere around $1.4 billion to $4 billion.
The argument sounds simple:
The government sees jobs, tourism, and foreign investment.
Critics see something much harder to replace: protected coastline and wildlife habitat.
And this is where the story gets interesting.
Albania is trying to become a major tourism destination, but the same beaches and natural areas attracting visitors are the exact places people are now fighting to protect.
The protests grew from a local dispute into a national movement, with thousands gathering in Tirana.
On June 20, estimates ranged from around 100,000 to more than 250,000 protesters.
Not one million.
Despite the government issuing personal threats against individuals , Albanians refused to back down. They doubled down instead, and nearly one million people are currently protesting in the streets to bring down the corrupt government.

Albania has a population of about 2.4 million, which makes the size of the demonstrations significant even without inflated numbers.
The government of Prime Minister Edi Rama says the project will bring economic benefits.
But critics are asking a different question:
If every beautiful piece of coastline gets turned into a luxury development, what exactly is left that made the country worth visiting in the first place?
