The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee alleged that the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) of Washington, D.C., under the leadership of outgoing police Chief Pamela Smith, manipulated crime statistics.
The new report, released Sunday, accuses Smith of pressuring department employees into falsely reducing crime classifications to intermediate offenses in order to lower the number of felonies in MPD’s daily crime report.
Last week, Smith announced her resignation, effective at the end of this month. She was appointed by D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) in July 2023.
For its investigation, the committee, chaired by Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.), interviewed seven acting MPD commanders and one suspended commander.
The committee launched its investigation into MPD’s reporting of crime data in August, less than two weeks after President Trump, citing crime concerns, deployed the National Guard to the nation’s capital.
