Pa. Senate introduces bill to bar illegal migrants from public housing

Sharing is Caring!

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WTAJ) — The Pennsylvania Senate has introduced a bill that would bar illegal migrants from being eligible for public housing in the Commonwealth.

Introduced by Senator Wayne Langerholc (R-Cambria, Centre and Clearfield), the legislation focused on a 2021 HUD requirement that made every illegal migrant eligible for a housing voucher. The waiver has granted housing authorities across the nation significant latitude regarding immigration status, which was “a troubling development,” according to the legislation memo.

Current federal requirements allow illegal migrants to be the head of the household and still receive housing assistance. Former HUD Secretary Marcia Fudge testified earlier this year before the House Financial Service Committee. During the testimony, Fudge said that HUD places no restrictions on local housing authorities using funds to house illegal migrants.
