From a PR point of view (and Israel is losing the PR war), bombing a hospital in Gaza and killing hundreds of civilians, is pure suicide, hence the theory that the Palestinians bombed themselves by mistake got some traction in certain circles.
However, my speculative read on why Israel would bomb a civilian hospital and piss off the world is that Biden was about to arrive in the region to meet with the leaders of the various other Middle Eastern leaders in addition to Netanyahu, and the Israelis feared he would strong-arm Israel into a subdued action in Gaza to maintain regional stability.
This attack ruins the American diplomatic position, the Muslim world is livid.
Israel doesn’t want the Americans negotiating a peace, it wants to force the Americans to defend them in a war.
By the way, the fact that threats from Hezbollah and Iran can cause military paralysis in Israel and the US is a remarkable new development.
Israel is now signaling they may not do a ground invasion after all, but this could be a deception.
It could also be that taking this loss is less catastrophic than the loss they were about to take.
