Instagram has lifted its suspension of Democratic candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (RFK Jr.).
The lifting of RFK Jr.’s 2021 ban was pushed through three days after he mentioned the ban in a tweet. He tweeted on June 1: “Instagram still hasn’t reinstated my account, which was banned years ago with more than 900,000 followers.”
Meta spokesman Andy Stone confirmed the reinstatement of the presidential candidate’s account in a June 4 statement. He wrote: “As he is now an active candidate for president of the U.S., we have restored access to RFK Jr.’s, Instagram account.” Meta is the parent company of Instagram, which Mark Zuckerberg acquired in 2012.
RFK Jr. found himself banned from Instagram back in February 2021 for allegedly posting “misinformation” about the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) and the safety of vaccines against it. That time, a spokesperson for Meta said his account was removed “for repeatedly sharing debunked claims about [COVID-19] or vaccines.” In response, RFK denounced the censorship as “counterproductive” in an emailed statement.
Even though Instagram reinstated RFK Jr.’s account with 900,000 followers, it is unknown whether he can now create new campaign accounts. Previously, any new accounts made by his campaign team were immediately slapped with a six-month suspension as soon as they were made. “When we use our Team Kennedy email address to set up Instagram accounts, we get an automatic 180-day ban,” RFK Jr. lamented on Twitter. “Can anyone guess why that’s happening?”
The founder and general counsel of Children’s Health Defense ultimately remarked: “To silence a major political candidate is profoundly undemocratic. Social media is the modern equivalent of the town square. How can democracy function if only some candidates have access to it?”
RFK Jr.: Censorship pushers aren’t the good guys
In April, RFK Jr. sat down with Joel Pollak of “Breitbart News Sunday” for an exclusive interview. The candidate said: “We’re now in this situation where without free speech, democracy just withers and dies. Free speech is the fertilizer; it’s the sunlight; it’s the water for democracy.”
“There is no time in history where the people who were censoring speech were the good guys. They’re always the bad guys because, of course, that is the first and last step of totalitarianism – silencing critics.”
For his part, Pollak noted that Andrew Breitbart – the site’s founder and namesake – “used to say ‘We always need more voices, not fewer voices. The answer to speech you don’t agree with is more speech, not less speech.’”
J.D. Rucker, the editor-in-chief of the NOQ Report, put in his two cents on RFK Jr.’s predicament in a piece for the Liberty Daily. He wrote: “The banhammer drops in real time for those committing wrongthink … [and] RFK Jr. learned that the hard way.”
“Democrat or Republican, big candidate or small, accounts on social media ‘platforms’ that have not engaged in illegal actions should never be banned. In fact, nobody’s account on these ‘platforms’ that are given the blanket of government protection should get banned for legal speech,” continued Rucker.
“If these ‘platforms’ decide they want to limit speech, they need to have their government protections immediately removed.”
