If we had a functioning news media, there’s a video that would be leading every newscast right now. It has nothing to do with a plane crash in Russia, a GOP primary debate, or even the indictment of every lawyer who’s ever given Donald Trump legal advice, as important as all those topics may be. This video is about Americans — including children — who died horribly this month. It’s about how their deaths could have been prevented if their government was even remotely competent.
The footage I’m talking about is an interview with a survivor of the fires in Maui. This interview was conducted not by CNN or NPR but by a real estate agent who moonlights as a citizen journalist. He spoke with a man who goes by “Fish” and survived the blaze in Lahaina. Here’s what that man saw. . . .
He says, “All the cars were lined up, but none of them were moving. . . . And I was wondering what was stopping the traffic. It was a policeman.”
Only those who disobeyed, survived.
The Maui whole thing was been a HUGE disaster, mismanaged from start to finish. The kids at home alone who burned up? We still don’t know how many. The people who died in their cars because the police blocked the escape routes or told them to go back home? The people who were forced into the ocean and stayed clinging to rocks and buoys for hours in the dark with super-heated smoke and debris falling around them? The idiot official who said water couldn’t be used to put out the fire because of “equity”? The emergency management head who had no experience in emergency management? The reports from months prior saying the electricity delivery network was dangerous and could start fires that were ignored? The announcement that the morning fires had been 100% contained? The expensive, world-class siren that never went off? The cops who said they went door to door with bullhorns but nobody remembers anything like that happening? Of course they want to pretend it never happened. And as much as we have heard about this story, it is in reality very quiet compared to the huge coverage, interviews, front page articles, whole TV shows a mega-scandal like this deserves.
