Boston City Councilor arrested in $13,000 kickback scheme, facing federal charges.

Sharing is Caring!

Boston City Councilor Tania Fernandes Anderson was arrested on federal charges related to public corruption. She faces six felony charges, including wire fraud and theft concerning federally funded programs. These charges come from an alleged scheme where Fernandes Anderson is accused of taking taxpayer money for personal gain.

According to the indictment, in 2023, Fernandes Anderson faced financial difficulties and orchestrated a plan to funnel a $13,000 bonus payment meant for a staff member. However, $7,000 of that bonus was allegedly returned to her in cash. The transaction supposedly took place in a bathroom at City Hall, a location meant for official business, not corrupt dealings.

The arrest has shaken the public and local government. Mayor Michelle Wu has called for Fernandes Anderson’s resignation, stating that the charges compromise public trust and prevent her from continuing in office. The case raises concerns about the abuse of public office for personal enrichment, especially when taxpayers’ money is involved.
