Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has declared a ceasefire with Hezbollah, concluding over a year of devastating conflict. The agreement, announced on November 26, 2024, mandates significant troop withdrawals and promises a fragile but vital pause in hostilities.
The ceasefire, brokered by the United States, will take effect at 4 a.m. local time on November 27. Key terms include Hezbollah pulling its forces south of the Litani River and Israeli troops withdrawing from southern Lebanon. Within 60 days, the Lebanese army will assume control of the border, replacing Hezbollah in the volatile region.
The conflict, the deadliest since 2006, has claimed over 3,800 lives in Lebanon and left 16,000 wounded. Displacement has been staggering, with 1.2 million Lebanese and 50,000 Israelis forced to flee their homes. Netanyahu stressed the importance of enforcement, stating, “A good agreement is an agreement that can be enforced, and we will enforce it.”
U.S. officials, including President Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken, played a critical role in facilitating the deal. Biden emphasized the aim for a “permanent cessation of hostilities,” while Blinken confirmed the agreement’s final stages were reached after months of negotiations.
U.N. peacekeepers will monitor compliance, a crucial element to maintaining peace in the region. This ceasefire offers hope but also a stern test for all parties involved in upholding the fragile agreement.
