The UK counterterrorism program labels classics like George Orwell’s 1984 and The Lord of the Rings as examples of right-wing extremism.

Sharing is Caring!

The UK government’s counterterrorism program, Prevent, has sparked outrage for targeting beloved classics like Lord of the Rings and George Orwell’s 1984. The taxpayer-funded initiative claims these works could radicalize readers toward right-wing extremism, a move critics are calling absurd and overreaching.

Prevent’s Research Information and Communications Unit (RICU) compiled a list of so-called “extremist” texts, including Brave New World and GK Chesterton’s poetry. While intended to curb radicalization, this approach has drawn widespread backlash for smearing cultural staples as dangerous.

Douglas Murray blasted the program, calling its efforts “inept.” Instead of addressing genuine threats, Prevent has undermined itself by targeting literature that champions freedom, individuality, and morality—values critical to Western society.

The controversy raises serious concerns: Is this an attack on conservative ideals veiled as counterterrorism? And why are taxpayer dollars funding a war on the classics?
