The aftermath of Hurricane Helene in North Carolina has uncovered a troubling situation involving toxic mud. The flooding has resulted in a hazardous mix of sewage, hazardous materials, and unidentified substances, creating a perilous environment for residents and cleanup crews.
Health risks are escalating, with numerous residents and volunteers reporting adverse health effects from exposure to the mud, including skin irritation and respiratory issues. The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is currently investigating potential contamination sources.
Alarmingly, cadaver dogs have also fallen ill after encountering the toxic mud, underscoring the seriousness of the contamination. In response, authorities are strongly advising residents and cleanup workers to don appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including full hazmat suits, to safeguard against health hazards during the cleanup efforts.
