Germany’s Parliament has enacted the Self-Determination Act, allowing parents to transition their child from birth. Effective November 1, 2024, this law simplifies changing legal gender and first names through a straightforward self-disclosure form.
For children under 14, parental consent is required, and parents must submit the necessary documentation for any gender changes. Children aged 14 and older can initiate the process themselves, provided they have parental approval.
The law also includes strong legal protections, making it illegal to “deadname” a trans person or disclose their birth gender without consent. Violations can lead to fines up to €10,000 (approximately $10,972).
Public reaction has been mixed. Supporters argue the law simplifies gender recognition and empowers individuals, while critics contend it may undermine traditional values and parental rights. As discussions continue, this legislation marks a significant shift in Germany’s approach to gender identity and rights.
