Free speech now ranks as the second-most important issue for Americans in the election.

Sharing is Caring!

A recent poll conducted by the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) and NORC at the University of Chicago has uncovered a striking trend: 63% of Americans deem free speech a “very important” issue for the upcoming 2024 presidential election, placing it just behind inflation on their priority list. This revelation underscores the deep concern many citizens have regarding their rights to express themselves freely.

When comparing this vital issue with others, free speech emerges as a top contender, overshadowing concerns about healthcare, immigration, crime, and gun policy. The data is clear: Americans are increasingly aware that the freedom to express differing viewpoints is foundational to a healthy democracy.

What’s even more compelling is the bipartisan agreement on this matter. An impressive 91% of Republicans and 90% of Democrats consider free speech at least “somewhat important.” However, a notable distinction exists: 70% of Republicans classify it as “very important,” compared to 60% of Democrats. This divergence highlights a significant political landscape where the urgency surrounding free speech resonates more strongly within the Republican base.
