Florida sues DOJ for alleged interference in Trump assassination attempt investigation, says AG.

Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody is taking on the Biden-Harris Department of Justice (DOJ) in a lawsuit, alleging federal interference in Florida’s investigation into an attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump. The incident in question occurred on September 15, 2024, when Ryan Routh was arrested at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach with a firearm, leading to charges including attempted assassination of a presidential candidate.

The DOJ claims federal law mandates FBI jurisdiction over political assassination attempts, effectively blocking Florida’s efforts to conduct its own probe. Moody’s lawsuit argues Florida has a “sovereign interest” in investigating potential violations of state law and contends that the DOJ is obstructing Florida’s constitutional rights by restricting witness interviews and enforcing exclusive cooperation with the federal investigation.

In response, the DOJ has declined to comment on the pending lawsuit, though sources indicate that Florida may proceed with prosecution after federal proceedings conclude. Florida’s suit seeks a judicial ruling to assert the state’s right to investigate without federal interference.
