Hungary says it will provide free tickets to Brussels for migrants trying to enter the EU

Hungary’s anti-immigration government is prepared to provide free one-way tickets to Brussels for migrants and asylum seekers attempting to enter the European Union, a minister said Thursday in response to hefty fines recently imposed on the country over its restrictive asylum policies.

Speaking at a news conference in Budapest, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s chief of staff, Gergely Gulyás, criticized a June ruling by the European Court of Justice that ordered Hungary to pay a fine of 200 million euros ($216 million) for persistently breaking the bloc’s asylum rules, and an additional 1 million euros per day until it brings its policies into line with EU law.

“Brussels wants to force us at any cost to let migrants in,” Gulyás said, referring to the EU’s headquarters in Belgium.

He said that if the EU continues to force regulations on Hungary that “does not make it possible to detain migrants at the border,” his country will offer every migrant “transport to Brussels free of charge.”

A Hungarian government minister has warned the EU that the country will send migrants to Brussels if the bloc continues to demand that it accept more asylum seekers.

“If Brussels wants migrants, they will get them,” Gergely Gulyás, minister for the prime minister’s office told a press conference on Thursday. “We will give everyone a one-way ticket if the EU makes it impossible to stop migration at the external border.”

The minister made the incendiary remarks in reference to a heavy €200 million fine that the European Court of Justice (ECJ) handed down to Hungary in June for repeatedly ignoring EU asylum rules. The penalty also included a daily €1 million fine for each day of delay in bringing Hungary into line with EU law.

At the time, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán described the court’s decision as “outrageous and unacceptable”.

“It seems that illegal migrants are more important to the Brussels bureaucrats than their own European citizens,” he said.

Hungary’s government says it’s ready to give every migrant trying to enter the country a one-way ticket to Brussels if a top EU court ruling forces Budapest to adopt a “no-detention” refugee policy.

“After the asylum procedure, we will offer all migrants at the Hungarian border the opportunity to be transported to Brussels voluntarily and free of charge,” said Gergely Gulyás, a minister in Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s office, at the government’s weekly briefing Thursday. “If Brussels wants migrants, it can have them.”

Gulyás added that asylum-seekers “can then negotiate there with the European Commission about their own care.”
