In the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl, an uncrewed ocean drone captured dramatic footage as it intercepted the northern edge of the historically powerful storm in the Caribbean Sea. The drone, known as a saildrone, crossed paths with Hurricane Beryl 100 nautical miles south of Puerto Rico. At that point, the storm was a Category 5 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 155 mph (reaching a peak of 165 mph at one stage). The waves documented by the drone towered over 25 feet tall, roughly equivalent to the saildrone’s height if it were flipped vertically. The vehicle faced tropical storm conditions with gusts reaching around 61 mph. You can also watch the shocking footage captured by the ocean drone here. The saildrone, designated as SD-1041, is part of a fleet deployed during hurricane seasons to gather crucial storm data, collaborating with federal meteorologists to study ocean surface behavior during hurricanes.
