The tragic incident involving the South Fork Dairy Farm in Dimmitt, Texas resulted in the loss of approximately 18,000 cows. The explosion occurred on April 10, 2023, and it left one person critically injured. According to authorities, the fire and explosion were accidental, originating from an engine fire in a manure vacuum truck that was cleaning part of the barn. While some cows survived, others were injured to the point where they had to be destroyed12This devastating event is considered the deadliest barn fire involving cattle since 20131Dimmitt, located in Castro County, is known for its significant milk production and has more than 59,361 cows.
