Colorado Libertarian Party sues to decommission voting machines after password leak scandal.

Sharing is Caring!

The Colorado Libertarian Party has filed a lawsuit against Secretary of State Jena Griswold, demanding the decommissioning of all voting machines in Colorado and a shift to a total hand count of ballots. This legal action arises from the accidental leak of partial passwords for voting systems by the Secretary of State’s office, raising serious concerns about election security.

The lawsuit, filed by the Libertarian Party alongside James Wiley, a candidate for Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District, alleges that the leaked passwords could enable unauthorized access to voting systems. They argue that this breach poses a significant risk to the integrity of elections.

The lawsuit highlights a precedent from August 2021, when a similar exposure of BIOS passwords led to the decommissioning of 41 voting system components in Mesa County, necessitating new equipment purchases at the county’s expense.

In response to the leak, the Secretary of State’s office asserted that the passwords had been changed immediately and claimed that the leak did not pose an immediate threat to the election’s integrity. However, the lawsuit has ignited controversy, prompting calls for Griswold’s removal from office and intensified scrutiny of the state’s election security protocols.
